• A Year with Mr. Booby: My 2027 Calendar

I spent yesterday figuring out how to turn my Mr. Booby drawings into a desk calendar. Here’s a quick flip-through of the result: Your browser cannot play this video. Download video. Want one? You can pre-order a copy in my shop with just your first name and email. No payment yet. If you’d like to make a custom calendar of your own, here are a few tips.

• Fresh Perspectives from Adam Grant

Living in the Bay Area, I feel I should take advantage of the proximity by attending at least one conference on AI or agents every year. Since 2023, that is exactly what I have done. AI development is a bit like the universe: not just expanding, but expanding at an accelerating rate. And yet, I have gradually noticed that after each conference, though my brain is overstimulated by firehose of information, my heart feels a little numb. The moments when I walk away feeling truly moved have become

• Confessions of a Reluctant Camper

I have a confession: for the longest time, I was not a fan of camping. I never understood why people wanted to bring so much of home into a remote place: cooking gear, raw food to cook over a campfire, a heavy bundle of firewood, a tent to assemble, and an inflatable mattress that somehow always felt slippery and left my back and neck aching. The one thing that mesmerized me was the fire. While everyone else sang and chatted, I could sit for a long time, entranced by the dancing flames. But that

• Meet Mr. Booby

Hey, it’s been a while since I updated the blog. The reason is that I’ve been drawing. I joined a two-month drawing challenge that runs from August through October. One small drawing a day Monday through Friday, and something closer to a little comic over the weekend. I also bought a very lovely square blue sketchbook for it. Today is the first day of week three, and I finished early for once, so it feels like a good moment to look back at how far I’ve gotten.

• Embrace Renaissance Self in the Era of AI

Historically, being a Renaissance person meant you could paint, compose music, study astronomy, write, engineer, and explore philosophy. For most of history, that required decades of apprenticeship in each discipline. Without the help of AI, I would never have dared to try. I didn’t have the proper training, and I didn’t think I had the talent for it. But today I made an album with two tracks. It’s called Winter Camelia.

• David Greybeard and Pablo

I recently watched the new Netflix documentary A Gorilla Story: Told by David Attenborough. I came to it right after the British royal family celebrated Sir David’s 100th birthday in this charming video — half Harry Potter, half nature fairytale, and lovely in the best possible way. The film returns to a gorilla named Pablo. He’s the one from the iconic BBC footage, back when Sir David was still young and met mountain gorillas for the first time, in 1978. He had set out to explain the evolution

• Do You Know How to Tend the Garden of Dreams?

Some species of dreams are so exotic that most people have only heard of them in stories. A few have attempted to grow them. Fewer have succeeded. And usually, they are not people you know personally. It’s been told that they take extreme effort, skills, time, and a blessed kiss from luck. They also tend to have expansive root systems, meaning they can take a lot of nutrients from the soil and you’d need to give up the idea of having a neat, blooming garden ready by the summer tea party.

Last night was the night I’d been counting down to. On April 23rd → Venus would act as a signpost to Uranus. At 6pm, while the sun was still up, I asked Mitch to move the eight-inch Dobsonian out to the front porch, anticipating to catch Venus and Uranus together in the same frame of the 30mm eyepiece. We didn’t find Uranus, likely drowned out by Venus’s glare. Poor Uranus: compared to its solar-system sibling Venus, it’s about 7,600 times dimmer.

I don’t generally consider myself someone who likes to set goals. But I’m surprised to find that I really like setting goals for what to observe with my telescope this month. The thing is, my eight-inch Dobsonian telescope weighs about 70 pounds, too heavy for me to lift on my own, so I can’t observe on Thursday, because Thursday is Mitch’s Magic The Gathering (MTG) night. • How to Use Claude Code with AWS CLI

AWS has a lot of services. And each service has its own console, its own navigation, its own way of doing things. Every time I need to check something — CloudWatch logs, an ECS task, an S3 bucket — I find myself clicking through a maze of menus, forgetting where things are, and opening five tabs just to find one error message. What’s the last time you saw a sunrise? Sunsets are relatively easy to catch even if most people don’t pay much attention to. But most people have way fewer encounters of sunrise. • AI Music — Beautiful Yet Forgettable

One of the bloggers I recently discovered is Alex Hsu, who shared how he’s been making music with Suno. The generated music from Suno V5 was so good he could listen on repeat for hours. He called it like having a private chef: you tell it what flavour you’re in the mood for, and it makes it on the spot. That intrigued me.
