• What I read in 2023

28 December 2023 /109 This year, Goodreads tells me I managed to read 24 books in 2023 which is well down from the 40 I read last year, but much higher than the measly 8 I managed in 2021. I think technically it's 26 because it counted 3 books in a trilogy as a single one, and 27 if I count the one I'm still reading. I usually have 2 books on the go at once – one physical or Kindle one I can take on long train journeys, and one audio that I can "read" while I'm cleaning, walking, doing a jigsaw

• What I read in 2022

27 December 2022 /108 According to Goodreads, this year, I read 40 books. This was a huge jump from the 8 I read in 2021. I had more time on my hands after leaving Snyk at the end of spring, and devoted a lot of that time to listening to audiobooks, reading on a kindle, and reading real, physical books – either borrowed from friends or purchased on a whim. I followed closely what my friends were reading and rating, gravitating towards those, or reading books by the same author if I’d really enjo

02 August 2022 /107 When you're planning a new feature, perhaps you have a big checklist of things you go through. Or maybe you don't, and just hope that you've remembered everything. I was one of those checklist people, adding items to my launchlist over the years based on what I'd learned from shipping the previous feature – things that I was embarrassed that we'd miss in the rush of delivering something new, like "add logging" and "check the design works on small screens". 16 May 2020 /106 It's been almost three years since I last posted here. Time's gone both quickly, and slowly. It seems pertinent that my last post was about my favourite books about the apocalypse, given the apocalyptic themes of the past few weeks… months…. I feel guilt at how little overall this affects me. My working environment is different – perched on a shelf in my bedroom rather than traversing between trains, my office desk, and a phone booth. In some ways, life has improved – after a sp

• My favourite books (and games) about the apocalypse

27 December 2017 /105 It feels a bit macabre to admit it, but I’m a big fan of the apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic genre. I’m in my happy place when I’m watching zombies chase after Rick in The Walking Dead, or killing Radroaches in Fallout. This is why: The Walking Dead has lots of zombies, but it isn’t about zombies. The scariest things in their world are other people, and how survival has forced them to lose their humanity. The same is true in a lot of texts in this genre, and I find it interest

29 August 2017 /104 I was fifteen. I was cycling home from school, just a few roads left to go. The last stretch was tough, a main A-road. I notice a blue car pull up alongside me, as if overtaking. But it doesn't overtake, it stays alongside me. I see three or four men in the car, laughing. I carry on as it tracks my pace. Suddenly, the car jolts into me, just missing my right elbow. I swerve left and rebalance. The men laugh more, and I suddenly realise, they're laughing at me. They're playing

• What we can learn from the Y2K bug

05 February 2017 /102 The Guardian's Chips with Everything podcast recently published an episode about the Y2K bug, which I recommend you listen to if you write software. The Y2K bug came about due to the small amount of storage space that computers traditionally had which meant that, for optimisation, years were presented as 2 digits (80 for 1980, or 99 for 1999). The problem was when that ticked over to 2000 – the year would be presented as 00, and sorting algorithms would look at that date an

29 January 2017 /101 My last post was a behind the scenes report on writing my book, Front-end Style Guides. It had this whole section about finances which I didn't feel ready to share, so I put it to one side. I'm still not sure whether it's a good idea (writing about money feels weird), but I want to be transparent if it'll help others. The original version of Front-end Style Guides sold at £2. I think it was a 50/50 split between me and the publisher. I sold something like 1,000 when I was wi

07 January 2017 /100 Last week, I published a new version of my book, Front-end Style Guides. 15 October 2016 /99 One of the first things I bought when we moved into our house a couple of years ago was a hedgehog house. I wasn't sure if there were hedgehogs in the area, but it's hard to know, since they only come out at night and during certain times in the year. A hole in my neighbour's fence, big enough for cats to squeeze through, would be the likely entry point if they were ever to visit. The hedgehog population in Britain is sharply declining, with fewer than a million left. A third

24 March 2015 /95 So, I recently bought a new lamp, and it had a part that needed unscrewing. Now, I've got a really fancy screwdriver. It's an ergonomic, ratcheting screwdriver and it's ace. But it was in my toolbox, and I just wanted to get this lamp set up so I could use it. Textured backgrounds seem to be all the rage, possibly spurred on by Apple's "skeuomorphic" design phase. Subsequently, I'm being sent a lot more mockups to mark up which have textured interfaces. Whenever I t

• Prototyping with CSS Flexbox

17 October 2011 /62 Since giving my first UX Bootcamp workshop on Prototyping in Code, I’ve been looking at ways to make it easier to teach CSS layout. I’ve tried demonstrating floats in a fish tank and how positioning works using diagrams and sketches, but it still seems pretty abstract to a CSS beginners. I’ve been having a read through the specs for the Flexible Box Layout Module. The name describes the behaviour of the boxes which can stretch and expand to fill content, with unused space bei

• CreativeJS workshop

03 October 2011 /61 I’ve just attended Seb’s CreativeJS workshop in Brighton. After seeing Seb talk at last year’s Full Frontal, and this year’s Update Conference, I was inspired to learn more about what new and exciting things can be done with Javascript. I haven’t done much programming before. I started out trying to learn Visual Basic and Actionscript when I was around 15, but didn’t get very far with it. • Running code workshops in schools

20 September 2011 /60 During Brighton’s Digital Festival, I ran 2 Hackasaurus workshops in local schools for students aged between 13 and 15. I did this with Aral Balkan who taught the concepts of programming using Scratch. The workshops I ran taught how to inspect HTML using a browser bookmarklet called the Web X-Ray Goggles. Students then start building their own webpages using snippets of HTML and CSS which I’ve put together in the Hackbook. I typically get 60 minutes to run the workshop, alt

• Hackasaurus Game Sprint

11 August 2011 /59 At the moment I’m in Toronto visiting Mozilla’s new offices and helping with a Hackasaurus sprint. This week we’re concentrating on games as a code learning experience, and had a group of kids aged between around 8 to 11 in to test out what we’d prototyped. This was quite a challenge since the office is still under construction. We had to compete with power drills, sanders and hammering, and we had a very limited space to work in. We also didn’t have enough computers, and just
